Psoriasis Treatment
There are many different types of psoriasis, including guttate psoriasis (associated with the sudden appearance of innumerable small papules), plaque psoriasis (large scaly pink plaques), pustular psoriasis (numerous small pus-filled bumps in a background of redness) and erythrodermic psoriasis (total body redness with chills and skin pain). Numerous psoriasis treatment options exist and can be tailored to the specific type and severity of psoriasis. A consultation with a board-certified dermatologist and possibly a rheumatologist (if there is joint involvement, i.e. psoriatic arthritis) is recommended.
Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory disease that affects the skin, nails and joints. The most common presentation is that of well-demarcated scaly pink plaques affecting the elbows, knees and scalp. The onset can be at any age, although it peaks during the 20s and again in the late 50s.
Etiology of psoriasis is multifactorial and not completely understood. There are some known inherited genetic factors and environmental triggers. Factors which may exacerbate psoriasis include immunosuppression, physical trauma, infections, drugs and cold weather.
